Siemens Healthineers has installed its first Biograph Vision PET/CT scanner in the U.S., at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Biograph Vision features the company's Optiso ultradynamic range (UDR) detector technology, which is based on digital silicon photomultipliers rather than conventional photomultiplier tubes. It also offers enhanced spatial resolution through the detector's smaller lutetium oxyorthosilicate (LSO) crystal elements, which have been reduced from 4 x 4 mm to 3.2 x 3.2 mm.

Siemens notes that Biograph Vision delivers higher spatial resolution while achieving time-of-flight temporal resolution of 214 picoseconds, as well as an effective sensitivity of 100 cps/kBq. These specifications help reduce scan times to as few as three minutes per patient for faster throughput, and lower patient radiation exposure and radiotracer costs. The system also has a 78-cm patient bore.

Other features on Biograph Vision include the company's OncoFreeze protocol, which provides PET/CT images with reduced motion artifacts compared with regular whole-body scans, while CardioFreeze applies OncoFreeze technology to correct respiratory motion in the heart.
