ASNC releases directive on cardiac amyloidosis imaging

The American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC) has published a set of recommendations for multimodality imaging of cardiac amyloidosis.

The consensus report, published in the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology, is divided into two sections that cover evidence and standardized methods of imaging and diagnostic criteria and appropriate utilization. It includes emerging imaging methods to facilitate earlier diagnosis of cardiac amyloidosis and improve prognostication and management with new treatment options.

The final product is a collaboration of 26 experts in cardiovascular imaging and amyloidosis who represent nine societies:

  • American College of Cardiology (ACC)
  • American Heart Association (AHA)
  • American Society of Echocardiography (ASE)
  • European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM)
  • Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA)
  • International Society of Amyloidosis (ISA)
  • Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR)
  • Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI)

"We anticipate that these expert multisocietal consensus recommendations on multimodality imaging in cardiac amyloidosis will standardize the diagnosis and improve the management of this highly morbid and underdiagnosed disease," said Dr. Sharmila Dorbala, director of nuclear cardiology at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, and Dr. Jamieson Bourque, director of nuclear cardiology at the University of Virginia, in a joint statement.
