Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) in Boston has received federal and state regulatory approval for clinical use of its 7-tesla MRI scanner on patients, as of September 10.

The 25-ton device was installed at the 793-bed nonprofit teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School in May 2017. BWH plans to use the Magnetom Terra scanner from Siemens Healthineers for advanced research as well as patient care for neurologic diseases, such as epilepsy and multiple sclerosis, and musculoskeletal conditions that involve the cartilage, muscle, and fascia of the knee joint.

Two 7-tesla MRI scanners are now in operation for clinical applications. In October 2017, the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, became the first medical center in North America to receive clearance for ultrahigh-field MR imaging for patients.
