Breast surgeon launches video school for patients

A breast surgeon in Gainesville, VA, has launched an online resource called the Breast Cancer School for Patients that he hopes will bridge the breast cancer education gap between patients and doctors.

Dr. John P. Williams of Novant Health/UVA Health System established the site, which includes modules on surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and genetics and features more than 80 educational video lessons.

The site offers resources such as a list of questions patients can take to appointments with their surgeon, medical oncologist, or radiation oncologist, the school said. It also educates patients on recent results from the Trial Assigning Individualized Options for Treatment, or TAILORx, which was supported by the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) and assessed the benefits of chemotherapy for breast cancer.
