MedaPhor signs on for fetal ultrasound trial

U.K. ultrasound training and quality assurance firm MedaPhor said it's providing quality control of fetal ultrasound images being acquired for the Household Air Pollution Intervention Network (HAPIN) trial.

Currently underway in Guatemala, India, Peru, and Rwanda, the HAPIN study is a randomized controlled trial to assess how using liquefied petroleum gas stoves instead of customary cooking practices affects air pollution, child health, and adult chronic disease, according to MedaPhor. As part of the trial, 3,200 pregnant women are being monitored with ultrasound to assess gestational age and fetal development. MedaPhor's sonographer panel and ScanNav artificial intelligence-based image inspection algorithms will be responsible for ensuring that these images are of the highest quality, the company said.

Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the HAPIN study is being led by principal investigators at Johns Hopkins University, Emory University, and Colorado State University.
