Siemens Healthineers has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for its Artis icono family of angiography systems.

The new lineup comprises the Artis icono biplane and Artis icono floor systems. Artis icono biplane is suitable for neuroradiology and abdominal imaging, while Artis icono floor is directed toward vascular, interventional cardiology, surgical, and oncology procedures, according to the vendor.

Artis icono biplane features significantly improved 2D and 3D imaging capabilities, as well as enhanced visualization of structures that are challenging to delineate, the company said. Siemens is also highlighting the system's features for facilitating stroke treatment and other neurological procedures. For example, the unit's syngo DynaCT Sine Spin conebeam CT technology feature is designed to reduce conebeam CT artifacts in the basal part of the brain and close to the skull, according to the vendor.

What's more, the system's DynaCT High Speed feature can shorten low-contrast 3D imaging time from 20 seconds down to 8 seconds, Siemens said. Clinicians can also switch back and forth between 2D biplanar imaging and 3D imaging.

Artis icono biplane offers flexibility for multispecialty use, allowing users to switch the detector's position from the patient's right side for interventional radiology procedures to the patient's left side for cardiovascular procedures in less than 90 seconds, Siemens said.

The second system -- Artis icono floor -- is a flexible, multiaxis system that can achieve the same angles as a ceiling-mounted system with a footprint of 269 sq ft, the company said. It provides coverage of up to 6 ft, 8 inches without having to be repositioned, as well as lateral coverage of 6.23 ft.

Both Artis icono biplane and Artis icono floor feature the vendor's new Optiq 2D image processing technology, which is designed to improve image quality across a wide range of C-arm angles and patient weights, according to the vendor. The company said that the systems include its Case Flows personalized workflow software, as well as improvements in Siemens' road map function for creating subtracted angiography images.
