UltraSight announced the results of a clinical study showing that medical professionals without any prior clinical sonographic experience can successfully perform diagnostic echocardiographic exams using its artificial intelligence (AI) guidance and quality assessment technology.

The study was conducted at Sheba Medical Center in Israel, the University of Chicago, and Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center in Milwaukee. Nine residents and registered nurses who had no prior cardiac ultrasound experience participated.

After a daylong training session, the participants scanned 240 cardiac patients and acquired 10 standard 2D transthoracic echocardiography views using UltraSight's AI guidance tool. The quality of the images was assessed and compared against comparable scans of the same patients performed by experienced sonographers who did not use the AI software.

The underlying AI neural network predicts the position of the ultrasound probe relative to the heart based on the ultrasound video stream and guides the user on how to maneuver the probe to acquire images of diagnostic quality. The UltraSight software is currently under review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and is pending a 510(k) clearance.
