Breast and lung imaging software developer Volpara Health presented data at RSNA 2021 supporting the value of automated breast density measurement.

In one study presented at the annual meeting, Volpara's software was compared to American College of Radiology (ACR) BI-RADS standards for classifying breast density in 318 screen-detected cancers and 100 interval cancers. Volumetric breast density measurements with the Volpara software were more strongly associated with tumor characteristics than classification using BI-RADS, according to the study, which was conducted by Dr. Stamatia Destounis of Elizabeth Wende Breast Care and colleagues. The data suggest the software could help identify which patients need supplemental screening beyond mammography, according to the company.

In another screening study by Destounis et al, volumetric breast density as measured with Volpara software was effective for identifying women at higher risk of being diagnosed with larger tumors, more so than if they had been classified with BI-RADS, the company reported.

Overall, the company software featured in 11 abstracts at the RSNA annual meeting, Volpara said.
