Low-field MRI effective for characterizing cystic and solid renal masses

In this Tuesday morning session, researchers will share findings that demonstrate the effectiveness of 0.55-tesla MR imaging for characterizing cystic and solid kidney lesions without compromising diagnostic accuracy.

A team led by presenter Radhika Rajeev, MD, of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, conducted a study that included 34 patients with 35 kidney masses. All study participants underwent 0.55-tesla MR imaging. Six fellowship-trained abdominal radiologists reviewed the scans, categorizing kidney lesions as cystic or solid and measuring lesion size. The readers ranked image quality on 0.55-tesla MRI on a 5-point scale, with 1 equal to "strongly unconfident" and 5 equal to "strongly confident."

Of the kidney masses, 23 were cystic, seven were solid, and five were alternate diagnoses. The group reported that the mean score for diagnostic confidence for characterizing these masses on low-field MRI was 4.1, and interreader agreement for differentiating cystic from solid masses and excluding alternate diagnoses was "substantial" (k =0.68).

"[Low-field] MRI is a viable option for diagnosis, staging, and active surveillance of cystic and solid renal masses," Rajeev and colleagues noted.
