Anthem Blue Cross will now cover Hologic's Acessa radiofrequency ablation procedure for treating uterine fibroids.
The insurer's new policy categorizes the use of laparoscopic or transcervical radiofrequency ablation as a treatment for symptomatic uterine fibroids as medically necessary when preservation of the uterus is desired and when the fibroids are less than 10 cm in diameter.
The Acessa procedure is an outpatient treatment that allows women to return to work in four to five days, according to Hologic. In the U.S., 11 million women currently have been diagnosed with uterine fibroids, the company said.
