Dear AuntMinnie Member,
Our top story this week covered an Annals in Internal Medicine study that outlined how false-positive mammography results appear to decrease women's likelihood of returning to breast cancer screening -- a trend especially prominent in women recommended for short-interval follow-up or biopsy.
The second most read article described how chest CT performed for other indications can opportunistically predict hip fracture risk by assessing the health of patients' fourth thoracic vertebra. Coming in third was our article on a data security breach warning issued by the RSNA regarding files containing personal information that may have been accessed by a rogue individual; the society said that it had "no evidence that any of the information has been used for identity theft or financial fraud as a result of the incident."
Another much-clicked story described the indictment by a federal grand jury of a Pennsylvania radiologist on charges of sexually exploiting a minor. Ashok Panigrahy, MD, entered a not-guilty plea on September 3.
We also offered coverage of a study that showed how machine learning used with CT imaging can foretell lung abnormalities; one that addressed the question of whether AI can actually improve radiologists' performance for diagnosing intracranial hemorrhage; and another that suggested that GPT-4V is limited in its ability to interpret radiologic images.
Finally, we've got a story about a near-miss MRI incident in California that is prompting oversight questions.
