Marconi gets clearance for AcQsim oncology scanner

Marconi Medical Systems has received Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance for AcQsim, a CT scanner designed for oncology CT simulation and planning.

Marconi says AcQsim is the first true CT simulator designed with an 85-cm large bore. The firm says the system will simplify planning even in difficult applications such as imaging of the breast, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and large patients.

The scanner includes a high-precision localization and marking system, as well as a virtual simulator that yields digitally composited and/or reconstructed radiographs that exceed the requirements of conformal and high-precision radiotherapy, according to the firm.

AcQsim is about the same size as standard 70-cm CT scanners, and it can fit in rooms that currently house a conventional simulator or CT scanner. Several sites will be installed in 2000, with general release scheduled for the spring of 2001, according to the Cleveland-based vendor.
