HealthScreen America, a Jacksonville, FL-based medical screening firm, has made virtual colonoscopy screening available directly to its consumers. The virtual colonoscopy uses a GE Medical Systems helical CT scanner in combination with Viatronix Visualization System imaging software from Stony Brook, NY-based Viatronix.
The technique uses a miniature rubber tube (the diameter of a straw) inserted into the rectum about 1-1/2 inches. Conventional colonoscopy requires a long fiber-optic scope to be inserted deep into the colon.
The new technology provides a more thorough and comfortable examination that takes only a few minutes, doesn't require sedation, and costs half as much as traditional colonoscopy, said Frederick Fey, HealthScreen America's president and COO.
