Philips Medical Systems has introduced Endo 3D - Unfolded, a virtual colonoscopy technique included in version 5.2 of its EasyVision multimodality image processing workstation. Endo 3D - Unfolded converts image data of the interior of the patient's colon into a series of unfolded views, according to the vendor.
When analyzed on a workstation, the images produce an omni-directional view of the inside of the colon, allowing for virtual inspection of 99.5% of the entire surface of the colon walls, according to Philips. Any suspicious areas can be immediately verified with the original CT or MR images, the vendor said.
Average time required to interpret the prone and supine data is just under 20 minutes per patient, Philips said. The technique has been installed at three hospitals for clinical testing, according to Philips.
