Controversy session probes CT radiation and risk

This session will take a new look at the data used to evaluate the association between radiation exposure and cancer risk. The participants will examine how those data have been used to quantify risk and assess the uncertainties inherent in those estimates.

"Radiologists have increasingly recognized the call to balance the value of imaging with an informed measure of radiation risk," session moderator Dr. Donald Frush from Duke University told AuntMinnie.com. "However, there is considerable debate about just what constitutes this 'risk.' Having experts speak on both sides of the issue will provide the necessary substrate to inform decisions and perspectives for risk."

Along with Frush, the session will feature talks by Dr. Rebecca Smith-Bindman from the University of California, San Francisco and Dr. William Hendee from the Medical College of Wisconsin.

"This session will focus on presenting the data regarding the harmful effects of ionizing radiation with respect to carcinogenesis that is easily understandable to RSNA attendees," Smith-Bindman wrote in an email to AuntMinnie.com.
