FDA clears new Siemens CT scanner

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared the Somatom Drive CT scanner from Siemens Healthineers.

The dual-source scanner is equipped with the company's new Straton MX Sigma x-ray tubes and Sigma generators, which allow more targeted beam focusing and enable exams using high energy levels at low voltages, the firm said. The lower voltages may allow clinicians to use less contrast. Also, x-ray tube voltages are adjustable in 10-kV increments ranging from 70 kV to 140 kV.

The system is also useful for pediatric CT exams because of its Stellar Infinity detector, integrated iterative reconstruction capabilities, and low kV levels, Siemens said.
