SAN ANTONIO - Fujifilm Medical Systems USA has entered the U.S. market for CT with a new scanner line designed for radiology and oncology applications. The system debuted at this week's American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) annual meeting.

Called FCT Embrace, the system sports an 85-cm bore that makes it well-suited for radiation therapy planning. It's available in 64- and 128-slice configurations and is powered by Analogic, a manufacturer of medical imaging scanners and subsystems.

Fujifilm is touting the high channel counts on FCT Embrace, which the company is highlighting as being unique for an 85-cm scanner. The company is also promoting the scanner's 49-cm-wide tabletop and ability to support patient weights up to 660 lb.

Fujifilm noted that the scanner's 85-cm bore matches the rotational arc of the linear accelerator, which makes patient positioning easier and more flexible for simulation and treatment planning. Oncology patients can be scanned in their optimal treatment position with the image quality possible on scanners that are 64 slices or higher; this helps maintain the accuracy required in radiation oncology, according to the company.
