Hologic reports loss despite revenue gains

Bone densitometry and digital radiography developer Hologic reported second-quarter revenues of $23.3 million, up 20% compared with the $19.4 million reported in the same period in 1999. For the period (end-March 25), the Bedford, MA-based vendor had a net loss of $2.2 million, double the net loss of $1.1 million reported last year.

The revenue increase was offset by several factors, including higher operating expenses related to the development of Hologic's digital radiography product line. Of the firm's revenues, $2.5 million were contributed by its Direct Radiography subsidiary. DR had a net loss of $2.8 million during the quarter.

Hologic has a sales backlog of $14 million, roughly half of which are for DR systems, according to the company. In other news, the firm announced that its Radex entry-level DR system will begin shipping next week, while its Epex full-function DR system will begin deliveries in July. Hologic debuted both the systems at the 1999 RSNA meeting.
