In response to growing interest among its membership, the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) will initiate an exam and limited-time certification in bone densitometry beginning January 1, 2001, the ARRT said. According to ARRT director Jerry Reid, Ph.D., recent advances in dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) technology have been accompanied by increased public awarenesss and comitment to bone health.
The certification of added qualification in DEXA will be limited to those ARRT members who have obtained ARRT registration in radiography, nuclear medicine technology, or radiation therapy. The designation "BD" (bone densitometry) can be added to the credentials of registered technologists, who must maintain their primary registration, ARRT said.
The exam will focus on osteoporosis and bone health, bone mass measurement, equipment operation and quality control, and patient preparation and safety, according to ARRT.
