Canon gets clearance for portable DR

Digital radiography developer Canon Medical Systems has received Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance for its CXDI-31 portable DR sensor. The amorphous silicon flat-panel CXDI-31 weighs 6.2 pounds and is less than an inch thick. It is suitable for use with stretchers, gurneys, and patient tables, according to Irvine, CA-based Canon.

Functioning in a similar manner as a film cassette, the CXDI-31 sensor allows technologists to capture an image from virtually any angle, according to Canon. If necessary, Canon said that patients can hold the sensor to assist in image capture. Images are available for viewing on a preview monitor approximately three seconds after exposure.

The flat-panel sensor offers a 100-micron pixel pitch, producing approximately 6.5 million pixels in a 9 x 11-inch format, according to Canon. It yields a 14-bit digital image, or 16,384 gray scales.

CXDI-31's list price is $85,000 for a retrofit to an existing Canon CXDI-22 digital bucky DR system, according to Canon. Clinical testing was completed at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation clinical radiology department and neonatal ICU unit.
