Will CR change digital mammography?

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

How will computed radiography (CR) impact the U.S. digital mammography market? It's a question on many people's minds, and the topic of our current Question of the Week.

Medical imaging vendor Fujifilm Medical Systems USA earlier this month became the first vendor to win approval to market a CR system in the U.S. for digital mammography applications. Many industry observers are now waiting to see whether mammography centers will embrace the new technology, which has been used internationally for several years.

CR has important advantages to help mammography practices go digital, including its lower cost. But full-field digital mammography, already well established in the market, could be tough to dislodge.

Let us know whether you think CR mammography will become a viable option by visiting our Question of the Week page, at question.auntminnie.com.

And remember, all Question of the Week participants will be entered into our monthly drawing for an Apple iPod nano portable music player. Our most recent winner was U.S. radiologist Dr. Tawfeeq Sayyed. You get an entry for every question you answer, so vote early and often! (Actually, you can vote only once for each week's question.)
