Digital radiography gains traction as x-ray goes filmless

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

It's been a long road, but digital radiography is finally gaining a strong foothold on the market. The technology is overcoming early concerns about price and is riding a wave of imaging facilities converting to filmless operation.

That's the conclusion of our newest Technology Review on digital radiography, which we're featuring in our redesigned Digital X-Ray Community. In the article, staff writer Wayne Forrest explores the growth of DR, the economics of DR implementation, and what types of facilities it's best suited for.

The economic benefits of DR are clear for facilities with high patient volumes. Imaging providers can nearly double their productivity, performing the same number of studies with fewer rooms and staff. DR can also help imaging sites that have PACS integrate their conventional radiography exams into their digital networks.

But computed radiography, a less costly technology, remains an alternative for some sites with lower patient throughput. Learn about how imaging facilities are choosing between the two technologies -- and in many cases installing both -- by clicking here.
