GE Healthcare of Chalfont St. Giles, U.K., is launching new software designed to help physicians conduct pediatric dual-energy x-ray absorbtiometry (DEXA).
GE said the application will help clinicians deal with a common problem in assessing pediatric bone density over time -- differentiating bone density changes from normal skeletal growth. The software allows physicians to measure a child's bone density and fat and lean tissue mass composition by factoring in and trending the child's age, height, and other variables, the company said.
GE is introducing the feature as an enhancement for its enCORE DEXA software at this week's American Society for Bone and Mineral Research meeting in Honolulu. At the meeting, GE has also announced that its iDXA and Prodigy DEXA systems have been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to measure and calculate bone, fat, and muscle mass for body composition analysis.
