FDA clears Pinyons contrast injector

Contrast injector developer Pinyons Medical Technology of Park City, UT, has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its PowrSyringe injector.

The product is a disposable handheld device that adds ergonomic and mechanical advantages to inject and aspirate fluids, including use in angiography, according to the company. The injector's crossing handles hinge to the syringe barrel and plunger to advance the plunger into the barrel when the handles are squeezed.

Pinyons sees PowrSyringe as a bridge between syringes and electronic injectors, and believes the device can improve image quality and reduce the amount of contrast used per patient compared to traditional syringes used in angiography.

Pinyons is developing a family of PowrSyringe devices for angiography, balloon catheter inflation, spinal diskography and vertebroplasty, biopsy, aspiration, and other general applications. The company expects PowrSyringe for angiography to be available for commercial sale in early 2008.
