Interventional device developer BioSphere Medical of Rockland, MA, highlighted results from a study that found that uterine artery embolization (UAE) compares well to laparoscopy as a treatment for uterine fibroids.
The study, published in the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, was conducted by researchers in Norway. Sixty-six women with uterine fibroids were randomized to receive either UAE or laparoscopy; 58 received treatment. Contrast-enhanced MRI was performed before and six months after treatment.
Fourteen women had symptom recurrence after laparoscopy (48%) and five women had symptom recurrence (17%) after UAE. Two women received hysterectomy after UAE (7%), while eight received it after laparoscopy (28%). Complete fibroid infarction was seen in all 26 patients in the UAE group and in only five patients in the laparoscopy group.
The study results further support the level A recommendation of UAE by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) announced last August, BioSphere said.
