GE installs new hybrid OR at St. Luke's

St. Luke's University Hospital in Bethlehem, PA, is the first U.S. site to install GE Healthcare's Discovery IGS 730 Hybrid Operating Room (OR), an interventional suite that combines surgery with advanced imaging, GE said.

The system's flexibility allows multiple or combined endovascular and open procedures to be performed at the same time in the same room, GE said. It is designed to save time and potentially lives, particularly in emergency situations when time is of the essence.

Discovery IGS 730 Hybrid OR combines the flexibility of a C-arm with the image quality of a fixed system, according to GE. The system allows complete patient access while helping to maintain a sterile operating environment using a laser-guided mobile gantry.

A tether housing the electrical connection to the unit allows the system to float; its flexibility enables the unit to be moved into multiple positions or out of the way, St. Luke's said. The system received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance in February of this year, according to GE.
