Two digital x-ray firms have developed a new image sensor for diagnostic imaging devices based on complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology.
Digital x-ray device manufacturer Genoray utilized TowerJazz's technology to develop the device, which has a 100-um pixel size and contains higher resolution than other devices on the market. It also includes a feature to control the sensitivity of the pixel, which can be applied in various types of medical equipment such as surgical C-arms and portable x-ray machines, the two firms said.
Conventional detectors use a silicon thin-film transistor (TFT) sensor, according to Genoray and TowerJazz. The advantage of a CMOS image sensor compared to a TFT is that it uses active pixels to obtain images with less noise and radiation exposure, the companies said.
