Texas delays radiation safety awareness training

The Texas Department of State Health Services said it has delayed indefinitely the implementation of the state's radiation safety awareness training rule.

In the January 13 announcement, Assistant Commissioner Kathryn Perkins said the department is considering additional information related to the requirement that may affect its enforcement. The provision had been added as part of the state's 2013 revision of its Use of Radiation Machines in the Healing Arts regulations.

During this delay, registrants and users of fluoroscopy equipment will not be required to meet the state's training requirements as described in the rule (25 Texas Administrative Code, Section 289.227 (m)(9)(E)).

In the meantime, the department said it also plans to evaluate and possibly modify training requirements, particularly for physicians.
