USPSTF posts final osteoporosis screening plan

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has posted a final research plan on screening to prevent osteoporotic fractures.

The task force will use the plan to systematically review research evidence and then issue a recommendation statement on the topic.

For its research approach, USPSTF will include adults 40 years of age or older who do not have a history of low-trauma fracture. It will evaluate risk assessment tools for low bone mass and/or high fracture risk and bone density measurement tests (including dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and quantitative ultrasound).

The task force will assess outcomes such as fractures and fracture-related morbidity and mortality, and will investigate the characteristics of screening and bone density measurement tests, including potential harms (such as unnecessary radiation, patient anxiety, and false-positive results), USPSTF said.
