USPSTF to review osteoporosis screening

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) is seeking comment on a draft recommendation for osteoporosis screening with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA).

Released on November 7, the guidance affirms the task force's 2011 final recommendation.

The task force gives DEXA a "B" rating for women 65 years and older and those younger than 65 at increased risk of osteoporosis and an "I" rating for men. The "B" rating means that the USPSTF believes the exam offers moderate to substantial benefit; the "I" rating means that current evidence is insufficient to determine the balance of the exam's benefits and harms.

The USPSTF is taking public comment on the document through December 4.
