The University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) was awarded a total of more than $10 million ($8.65 million U.S.) by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to identify and treat the causes of coronary artery disease.
A total of $4.7 million ($4 million) went to UOHI's Ruddy Canadian Cardiovascular Genetics Centre to support a gene sequencing, DNA analysis, and microchip technology program to identify and map the genetic makeup of coronary artery disease, the university reported.
Another $3.3 million ($2.85 million) went to the UOHI National Cardiac PET Centre to develop a molecular imaging program applying PET as a research tool for evaluating the function of cell and molecular processes in heart disease.
Matching funding from the Province of Ontario, coupled with other financial support, will push the research investment to some $20 million ($17.3 million), the UOHI said.
