PET findings prompt changes in therapy plans

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

A new study out of Australia finds that PET changes management of cancer patients in more than half of cases. The study is especially significant in that it could lead to increased government funding of PET in the country.

PET has experienced a measured rollout in Australia, with government approval for additional sites contingent on the collection of clinical data demonstrating the modality's effectiveness. To that end, the researchers studied PET's impact on patient management across a range of cancers, according to an article by staff writer Wayne Forrest in our Molecular Imaging Digital Community.

The types of cancers studied ranged from ovarian cancer to metastatic melanoma, and despite the disparity of disease the findings were remarkably similar -- PET changed patient management in around half of the cases. And echoing findings from other studies, PET detected numerous additional lesions not found by anatomically based modalities.

One of the study's presenters said the findings will prompt him to use PET in place of other technologies. Get the rest of the story by clicking here, or visit our Molecular Imaging Digital Community at molecular.auntminnie.com.
