Nuclear medicine vendors GE Medical Systems and Siemens Medical Systems have independently acquired minority equity positions in Imarad Imaging Systems, an Israeli developer of cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) gamma camera detectors. The deals will solidify both vendors' access to CZT detectors, which could lead to the development of solid-state digital gamma cameras.
Both GE, of Waukesha, WI, and Siemens, of Hoffman Estates, IL, have maintained product development relationships with Rehovot-based Imarad. Privately held Imarad has been developing CZT-based technologies since the mid-1990s.
Nuclear medicine vendors believe that solid-state digital gamma cameras could lead to major improvements in image quality. To date, however, only one company, Digirad of San Diego, markets a solid-state digital gamma camera.
