UK installs first Primus linear accelerator

Siemens Oncology Care Systems has installed the first of more than 50 new and replacement linear accelerators in the U.K. The accelerator is part of a program funded by the U.K.’s new opportunities fund, which provides £93 million for capital equipment acquisitions.

The Primus accelerator was installed at the Northern Centre for Cancer Treatment in Newcastle-upon-Tyne on January 2. The system features 3-D multileaf collimators and electronic portal imaging devices for intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT).

The Concord, CA-based company reports that two more Primus systems are slated for delivery to the Newcastle facility this spring and summer. Additional installations are also set to occur at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge and Derbyshire Royal Infirmary, U.K.
