Burdette receives NCI grant

Radiation therapy treatment-guidance developer Burdette Medical Systems has received a National Cancer Institute grant to develop a 3-D robotic image-guided prostate brachytherapy system. The grant was awarded to the Champaign, IL, company in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Computer-Integrated Surgical Systems and Technology.

The system will be designed to improve on ultrasound-based methods for guiding brachytherapy seed implantation. Burdette claims that current techniques often result in unacceptable rates of complications. The new system will consolidate the total implant procedure, and will reduce complication rates by improving the accuracy of seed distribution and radiation dosage, according to the company.
