At this year’s Society of Nuclear Medicine meeting, PET developer Positron is touting its mPower PET scanner as a versatile platform suited not only for cardiac imaging, but also for clinical PET oncology and neurology.
Positron had a profitable year in 2000, the first year in the black in company history. Although it failed to sell any scanners in the first quarter of 2001, the company said it is optimistic about sales this year. Meanwhile, the Houston-based PET manufacturer is partnering with a cardiology service to get wider distribution of its scanners.
The mPower system and its predecessor, Posicam, have been used primarily in cardiac imaging. With the advent of PET reimbursement in oncology, Positron is marketing its cameras for those applications as well.
Positron's systems have been used primarily with rubidium for cardiac imaging, but mPower is not necessarily optimized for that particular tracer, and can be used with FDG for oncology applications. mPower is well-suited for these uses due to its high sensitivity and count rate, according to Wayne Webster, Positron's vice president for marketing and sales.
In addition to showing mPower enhancements, Positron is also using the SNM show to introduce its new business partnership with Nuclear Cardiology Systems of Boulder, CO. With more than 200 turnkey nuclear cardiology facilities in the U.S., NCS is the dominant player in that market. According to Webster, NCS will use Positron’s mPower scanners exclusively for nuclear cardiology PET imaging.
"We don’t have a large sales force," Webster said. "Marketing through partners is an important way for Positron to reach its target market. NCS has broad experience in facility development, training, and financing. We will sell them the mPower PET scanner and they will include it with their nuclear cardiology product offering."
