Clinical trials begin for beta radiation treatment of peripheral vessel stenosis

Interventional cardiology firm Radiance Medical Systems has enrolled the first group of U.S. patients in its RAPID (radiation after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty is done) peripheral vascular clinical trial. Three de-novo lesion cases were completed at Rush Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago, and all involved the beta irradiation of a portion of the superficial femoral artery.

The patients were treated using the Irvine, CA-based company’s RDX system by the institution’s interventional cardiologists. Radiance said the trial was the first in the U.S. to use beta radiation to treat arterial stenosis in a peripheral vessel. A total of 14 patients, in the U.S. and Europe, have been treated using the RAPID protocol.
