New SNM regulatory guide for nuclear medicine

The Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM) has published a reference guide for nuclear medicine professionals who want to bring their facilities into compliance with recently revised U.S. regulations governing the medical use of nuclear byproduct materials. The Guide for Diagnostic Nuclear Medicine was authored by Jeffry A. Siegel, Ph.D.

New Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations (10 CFR, Part 35, Medical Use of Byproduct Material) govern the medical use and licensing of byproduct materials across the spectrum of diagnostic practice, the Reston, VA-based SNM said. The revised rule became effective October 24, 2002, and is designed to be less prescriptive than the previous rule, emphasizing risk-informed, performance-based approaches and focusing on outcomes rather than procedures.

The SNM reference guide was designed in close cooperation with NRC representatives, the SNM said, and covers all pertinent regulations, compliance concerns and standards, operating policies and procedures, and summary features. The SNM is developing a companion Guide to Therapeutic Nuclear Medicine, to be published in 2003.
