Belgian nuclear medicine products firm Ion Beam Applications (IBA) debuted a new PET radiopharmaceutical synthesizer at the Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM) show.
Synthera is a modular, multipurpose synthesizer that enables the production of PET isotopes such as fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG). The device includes an autoejectable integrated fluidic processor (IFP) that supports multiple runs, and its compact size allows three Synthera processing modules to be placed in one hot cell. This enables users to meet increasing FDG production demands while reducing the cost of operation, according to the company.
Also new was IBA Molecular's SNM booth and identity. IBA bought radioisotope distributor Eastern Isotopes in 2001, and in April 2006 moved the business into its IBA Molecular division.

IBA Molecular also announced a new subcontract manufacturing agreement with SAIC-Frederick of Frederick, MD, for the production of F-18 fluorothymidine (F-18 FLT) for multicenter clinical trials. F-18 FLT is an indicator of cell proliferation, and could become a tool for monitoring and management of cancer therapy in patients.
IBA will manufacture F-18 FLT with Synthera, and will distribute it through its network of radiopharmacies in the U.S. The agreement represents IBA Molecular's first distribution deal for an investigational PET imaging agent for clinical trials, according to the company.
