An estimated 1.13 million clinical PET patient studies were performed in the U.S. in 2005, up 60% from the 706,100 total studies produced in 2003, according to a report released by market research and consulting firm IMV Medical Information Division.
The PET studies were performed in 1,725 hospital and nonhospital sites, using dedicated PET/CT or PET scanners, mobile PET/CT scanners or PET scanners, or nuclear medicine cameras with coincidence detection (NM-CD), according to the Des Plaines, IL-based firm. Nearly 1,000 of the sites use a mobile service provider, typically for one to two days a week, and 735 sites own one or more fixed PET or PET/CT scanners, IMV said.
While the proportion of PET/CT scanners versus PET scanners installed to date is about 55%, more than 90% of the units installed in 2005 were PET/CT scanners, IMV said. In other findings, 93% of the studies performed on PET or PET/CT scanners are for oncology applications, while 7% are for cardiology and neurology applications.
Sixty percent of the fixed PET and PET/CT scanners are installed in nonhospital locations, and 40% are installed in hospitals, IMV said. The top five states with the highest PET and PET/CT patient study volume are California, Florida, Texas, New York, and Pennsylvania, according to the firm.
