DOE, MSU ink isotope research deal

Michigan State University (MSU) in East Lansing has signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to own and operate a $550 million nuclear physics research facility for rare isotope beams.

The Lansing State Journal reported that the DOE in December 2008 selected MSU to design, build, and operate the facility, expected to come online in 2017. The facility will house a superconducting linear accelerator at least 1,000 times stronger than MSU's current cyclotrons.

Locally, the project is expected to generate $1 billion in economic development in the first 10 years, 180 new jobs for scientists, and 5,800 jobs in construction and related industries.
