Molecular imaging vendor Positron of Fishers, IN, expects the shift from cardiac SPECT to cardiac PET imaging will accelerate now that the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has released its 2010 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS), the company said.
The updated MPFS increases myocardial PET perfusion imaging payments by 20%, while cardiovascular SPECT reimbursement for outpatient cardiology practices billing under CPT codes has been reduced by 36%, according to Positron.
The company expects that the concern over molybdenum shortages, patient radiation exposure, and increased PET reimbursement, combined with cuts for SPECT imaging, will push the industry toward cardiac PET.
Positron makes Attrius, a cardiac PET imaging device.
