Best Theratronics plans cyclotron production

Best Theratronics of Ottawa, Ontario, has announced plans to manufacture a range of cyclotrons and locate them around the world for the production of diagnostic and therapeutic medical isotopes.

The company is looking to build three types of cyclotrons -- 14 MeV, 35 MeV, and 70MeV -- for PET, SPECT, and therapy applications, and enter into partnerships with hospitals, clinics, medical and research institutions, and distributors to supply the isotopes.

The company currently is participating in a cyclotron project for a new molecular imaging facility in the Azores Islands.

Best Theratronics also unveiled plans to transform an existing cancer research facility at the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario at Kingston General Hospital into a cancer treatment center.

The facility will house a Theratron Equinox external-beam therapy system, augmented by 3D conformal radiation therapy (CRT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), and image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), with the capability to potentially treat more than 50 patients per day.

Funding of more than $1 million will take place over a four-year period, with the majority to be incurred this year.
