Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL) has reported that 98% of weld repairs are now complete at its National Research Universal (NRU) reactor in Chalk River, Ontario.
The facility, which manufactures and supplies approximately 50% of the demand for the radioisotope molybdenum-99 in North America, has been offline since May 2009 following a major water leak. Repairs began in December 2009 and currently are approximately 77% complete.
Part of the plan includes reactivating the NRU's auxiliary operating systems. To date, 21 of the 35 NRU systems have been placed in service.
AECL still expects the reactor to resume isotope production by the end of July.
