NECSA lands U.S. radioisotopes deal

The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA) and its subsidiary NTP Radioisotopes have won a radioisotope production contract from the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE).

Valued at up to $25 million, the award from the DoE's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is based on the successful commercial-scale production of molybdenum-99 using low-enriched uranium targets, according to the Pretoria-based firm.

The agreement will be carried out in collaboration with the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization (ANSTO), which will assist in providing support via a South Africa-Australia joint venture, NECSA said.
