The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Cancer Institute has awarded a new research grant to magnetic particle imaging (MPI) technology developer Magnetic Insight.
The Small Business Innovation Research grant will support a 12-month project to develop a commercial MPI platform that can detect and quantify localized inflammation in cancer, according to the vendor.
The company believes MPI is particularly well-suited for imaging inflammation caused by cancer and other diseases. The technique uses low-frequency magnets to detect, quantify, and visualize the 3D distribution of superparamagnetic iron-oxide (SPIO) tracers present in biomarkers of inflammation, including tumor-associated macrophages and T cells.
