Varian Medical Systems announced today that the Food and Drug Administration has approved its BrachyVision 6.0 treatment planning software for marketing in the U.S.
The imaged-based tool is a comprehensive planning system for all brachytherapy treatments, according to the Palo Alto, CA-based company. It can be used to develop treatment plans for low or high dose-rate brachytherapy, including treatment of cancer in the head and neck, cervix, lung, prostate, and breast.
The 3-D color images generated by the BrachyVision software offer doctors a better perspective on tumors, surrounding anatomy, and the impact of various radiation doses, Varian said. Treatment plans can be generated in as little 10 minutes for straightforward cervical cases.
