Threatened U.S. challenge kills Impac/Varian merger

In the wake of the U.S. Justice Department's announcement Monday that it would challenge a proposed merger of Impac Medical Systems with Varian Medical Systems, the companies have abandoned their merger plans, Impac said yesterday.

The Justice Department had opposed the merger on antitrust grounds, saying it would be detrimental to the oncology community, according to Mountain View, CA-based Impac. However, Impac president and CEO Joseph Jachinowski disagreed, saying that joining forces with Palo Alto, CA-based Varian would have accelerated the deployment of leading-edge cancer therapies throughout the world.

Impac will continue to focus on the development of oncology information management technology, Jachinowski said.
