Australia's Prince of Wales Hospital in Hospital will be the first site in the country to offer intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), according to Siemens Medical Group of Erlangen, Germany. Siemens Oncology Care Systems Group of Concord, CA, manufactures the Primus IMRT system that will be installed in the teaching hospital.
IMRT technology provides precise delivery of radiation to tumors so that the dose to surrounding normal tissues is reduced. The Primus system's Simtec software delivers verifiable, sequential doses of radiation that conform to the exact shape of the tumor, according to the company, while Primeview offers easy-to-follow graphics of the progress of radiation treatment. Meanwhile, the Imfast option processes the radiation intensity maps, and provides customized "layered" dose options, Siemens said.
Prince of Wales hospital has one of the busiest linear accelerator-based stereotactic practices in the world, and the Siemens system will enhance the facility's treatment capabilities, according to Dr. Robert Smee, the hospital's senior radiation oncology specialist.
