NCI trial to use Endocare cryoablation system

Cryoablation vendor Endocare of Irvine, CA, announced that the National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is supporting a multicenter trial to compare the palliative effects of cryoablation and radiation therapy for cancer patients experiencing focal pain caused by bone metastasis.

The prospective, randomized study, called Cryoablation and Radiation Effectiveness (CARE) for Bone Pain, will be led by Dr. Matthew Callstrom, P.hD., of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. It is intended to evaluate the efficacy of percutaneous cryoablation versus external-beam radiation therapy (EBRT) as measured by pain relief, quality of life, analgesic use, and complication rates.

The Endocare Cryocare system will be used to treat all the patients selected for the cryoablation arm of the study.
